Blu-ray Ripper with CUDA acceleration: how fast could it be?
Movie enthusiasts, you gotta try Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7 if you wanna accelerate the conversion speed when backing up BD collections to PC. I was so excited with the news that I performed a Blu-ray ripping process with CUDA vs. without CUDA test on my PC last night. Pavtube Studio claims 3X faster speed and 96min for ripping Avatar Blu-ray to 1080p MP4 on 4 cores PC with CUDA support (check for details here), well I do not own a fast PC and it took much longer to rip Inception BD… Anyway, the results revealed that it is actually 2.7 times faster when CUDA is enabled! Here’re more details:
Test environment
- Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU E2140 @1.60GHz
- Memory: 1022MB RAM
- Drive: External Sony BD drive with USB 2.0 USB cable
- Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, latest NVIDIA CUDA drivers installed
- Operation System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional

- Source Media: Blu-ray Disc Inception
- Software Tool: Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7.1.2290 trial version.
Test procedures
Step 1. Connect the external BD drive to PC, place in source Blu-ray Disc Inception. Ensure the desktop is networked. Install and launch the Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7 software (trial), click the BD icon to load Blu-ray Inception from BD drive.
Step 2. Select the main movie, click on the dropdown list of "Format", follow “HD Video” and select “MKV HD Video (*.mkv)” as output format. Click “Browse” to set a folder for saving converted H.264 MKV files.
Step 3. Click "Convert" button to start ripping Inception to hard drive, and take down the test data when conversion completes.
Step 4. Click “CUDA” icon to turn off GPU acceleration, and repeats Step 1 to Step 4.
Test results
It takes 16hrs (968mins) for ripping Inception Blu-ray to 1080p H.264 MKV with CUDA off comparing 6hrs (362mins) with CUDA on. Both of the conversions generate MKV file of 9.64GB. And both the file plays great in VLC Media Player. To conclude, the Blu-ray ripping speed is 2.67 times faster with CUDA enabled. I’ll call it an acceptable result for such a slow desktop. Hopefully the Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper can do better in future. Anyway, wish you luck with the implementation.
